The Victorian Modern Jive Championships (VMJC) was established in 2005 and is the premier Modern Jive Dance Competition in Australia.
Much more than just a competition, the VMJC is a huge weekend of social dancing, workshops and of course the Championships themselves!
The VMJC is held annually at Deakin Edge, part of Federation Square in the heart of Melbourne and attracts more than 350 competitors and spectators from all over Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the UK. The venue itself is a spectacular setting for such a prestigious event. With glass on 3 sides of the venue incorporating views of the Yarra River and filled with natural light, Deakin Edge is a beautiful place to be during the day. As evening falls, a magical transformation takes place and the stage is set for finals, and the incredible choreographed and costumed Cabaret and Team events. It's an amazing experience for enthusiastic dancers to experience life as a performer with raked seating, a flood of vibrant sound and a full lighting rig to create an impressive performance atmosphere.
The VMJC is an international event and brings together dancers from dance organisations around the world including Le Bop, Ceroc, Le Step, Move Your Body, Canberra Dance Company, Ceroc and Modern Jive Adelaide, WASDA, Fevah, Step 1, My Modern Jive, Modern Jive Melbourne & DanceVibe Newcastle. As such the VMJC includes many opportunities for dancers and spectators to get together on a social level, to make dance connections and of course trip the light fantastic with new found dance buddies.
Although VMJC is a prestigious and spectacular event, it is also a tremendously inclusive event - as organisers of the VMJC, we embrace and value the diversity of the Modern Jive (and broader) community and are proud to be inclusive and mindful of this diversity in all policies, offerings and interactions with others. We embrace all people regardless of their age, culture, disabilities, ethnic origin, gender, gender identity, marital status, nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. We continually challenge ourselves, and others, in an environment of mutual concern and respect for the free expression of all individuals.
